COVID-19 Theater Resources

Here are a few resources we've found that will hopefully prove useful for your theater.

At Rebel Cinema, we’ve been spending the last couple of weeks connecting with theaters and searching for resources for you. Here are some of the best ones we’ve come up with:

NATO: This is the National Association of Theater Owners. They have several resources for theaters, and I heard from their director of membership that “the NATO Executive Board authorized a one-time dues free year of membership that’s available now through 30 June 2020. Any eligible cinema (for-profit & non-profit) can apply to join the association and receive the free membership.” We would encourage you to connect with them, as they are up-to-date on how legislation is impacting theaters throughout the US. They are also keeping their theaters in the loop about all things legal and financial.

SMALL BUSINESS ASSOCIATION: This page gives you information about the current forgivable loans that you could qualify for. I would encourage you to take a look, and get in touch with someone if you have any questions! PLEASE NOTE: there are currently two different loans available for small businesses! Be sure to apply for the one that makes more sense for your business. We’re not bankers or accountants, so we’d rather you get in touch with the professionals with questions, but feel free to reach out if you’re having trouble figuring out who to connect with! Your local chamber of commerce might also be a good place to start.

Economic Injury Disaster Loan

Paycheck Protection Loan

ARTHOUSE CONVERGENCE: This is a group catering to non-profit arthouse theaters, so it may or may not pertain to you, but I thought I’d pass along their resource page in case you’d like to take a look. They’ve been very proactive and thoughtful in dealing with the crisis, and they are very well connected.

FUN REVENUE IDEA: Lots of theaters we’ve talked with are doing some sort of curbside popcorn sales! Some have said that it’s a good way to get rid of concessions that will potentially go bad before you reopen. Some are actually seeing a bit of revenue from it, but the majority that I’ve talked with are seeing it as a good way to stay connected with their community. One of the theaters I spoke with said, “It’s a way to say we’re still here, still going to keep going.” Here is a link to an article about a theater who’s doing this:

ONE MORE FUN, VERY INVOLVED IDEA: This theater did a pop-up drive-in! I imagine this would take a lot of work, but for some of you it might be a doable option to bring some cheer to your community!

QUICK REBEL CINEMA UPDATE: Our plan had been to launch our website at the end of March, but with the closing of theaters, we’ve decided to pivot a bit. We have been doing research and talking with some of our theaters about what they’re doing to keep their businesses going and spirits up! I wanted to share some of the helpful things we’ve discovered. We intend to move forward with our website in the meantime, and we will run another round of beta testing before launching. Our launch date is TBD, based on when things are reopening.

I hope that these resources were helpful or inspiring to you! We would really love to hear back from you- I’m hoping to stay connected with as many of you as possible! Any other ideas that you have tried? What is working for you? What are you brainstorming about?
